Our First Portable Pig Hut

This is the first portable hut that John built for our pigs.  The pigs were quite curious as he was moving it!  The design has steadily improved over the years.

The New Style Hut

It didn't take us long to realize that the peaked roof houses weren't the best design.  They were good for the pigs but it was very hard for us to get in and clean the hut out.  John sat down with pencil and paper and designed a house that was better for us and the pigs.  We use this hut as a sow hut or finisher hut - it's just one large area, no stalls or creep areas.  It's also insulated to keep the pigs nice and toasty in our harsh winter weather.

Newest Farrowing Hut

This is our newest farrowing hut - three stalls each with its own creep area.  Since we don't have any sows farrowing at the moment, Boris and four of the girls are living in it.  This hut is insulated as well, and we use straw for bedding in all of the huts.  We changed the doors on this one too so that the wooden half door is on the top and carpets are on the bottom. This allows the pigs to go in and out freely and the carpet over the door blocks drafts.  Now all I have to do is paint it when the warmer weather arrives.
